Obligatory yearly journal update

Thu Jun 5, 2008, 10:08 AM
So, I received another of those "You haven't posted any art in years!" comments last week from a friend. They were, of course, very perceptive. My last journal update was May of last year. My last deviation was February 2006 and my last scrap, October 2006.

The fact is simply that I no longer derive any enjoyment from drawing. I used to draw excessively and only rarely did I produce something that I felt was decent enough to share online. When I started University, I almost stopped drawing altogether. Yet still I spent some of my lectures sitting at the back of the room scribbling away on my notes. The problem was that I had enrolled on a programming course and I simply found it to be far more enjoyable than drawing.

Over the years, spare time became a somewhat abstract concept, with me working weekends to afford University. (Taking out a student loan would have been far too sensible, so I ignored that option.) What little free time I did have was consumed with additional programming and playing the newly released World of Warcrack, of which I am currently in the "hate" phase of my love/hate relationship with it.

At this point, my art had completely dried up. I was never a particularly good artist to begin with. but now I have only become worse for lack of practice. It is highly unlikely that I'll ever take up drawing again, as a result.

But now... now I have left University. I'm moving to Dundee soon to start my new job, working as a programmer for a games development company. Having steady 9 'til 5 hours ironically means that I'll have more free time now. And one of the things that I intend to do is spend my time working on my portfolio and developing new applications and small games.

deviantArt may not take submissions of video games, but I can still upload screenshots of my work and provide links to those programs. Over time, I will remove the majority of my current submissions and replace them with images of my new programming work.

I'd like to thank everyone who has watched my work over these last 6 years and I hope that you will enjoy my new work also.

PS. Eddie, you need to come and visit me in Dundee, man. :)
